Project description
Horror movies are meant to be scary. You might have seen Jaws from the 1970’s or Halloween kills from this year. Today’s generation might watch Jaws and think it’s not scary or older folks might watch modern horror movies and think they are unrealistic. What society considers scary depends on the generation and what has been displayed in horror movies to be scary for each generation which has different point of views. What kind of things makes a horror movie scary relies on what society has determined on what kind of things are scary. Society over the years has changed the definition of horror. Horror film could be monsters, serial killers, ghosts , zombies. Most importantly it is how society’s fears are reflected in horror movies. Horror is a very broad topic but it is also a very specific one. How are society’s fears reflected in horror? And does it really depend on the generation? The thinking skill for this project is reasoning which I keep in mind through out every section.
Is fear influenced by culture?
For english I researched how culture influences different fears and how. Different cultures have different beliefs in certain things. Culture creates the mindset and views of people. Wether that be rules, beliefs ,interests, and fears. Although culture is a big influencer different experiences also play a part in creating what an individual believes to be frightening. Personal experiences depending on who you are, where you live and who you've been raised all have a hand in creating everyone's personal ptsd's. I explained very specifically how each one of the subtopics I came up with relates to the overall idea of why cultures have different fears to stay in line with the project thinking skill.
History of fears
For history I created a timeline of the most famous horror movies of each time. I researched these movies, explained what each were about and added the date they came out. The second part explains why each movie was considered scary in each generation and what fear of society at each time was being reflected with the movie. This project was meant to highlight the idea the society's fears change as time goes on. We develop new ideas and learn new things that eventually become what we fear. Fear also changes with generation and the difference between the movies then vs now are very different.
Gallery or horrors
For art I created a digital art gallery with 15-20 art pieces. I wanted to use art pieces that were inspired by fear. I researched what the inspiration for each piece was and what fears inspired the painting for it to be considered scary. For stills I explained what the art piece was and what fear it represented in society. These art pieces not only were inspired by fear but society's fears like phobias and common fears created by society. Depending on what you believe to be scary many of these pieces might come as weird or eerie to some individuals. Others might not even be able to stand the sight of them. Of course the thinking skill in this project still exists in the descriptions I add to the art pieces in this digital gallery room.
