Project description
How does obesity affect mental health?
Obesity not only can affect your physical health but also mental health. With the physical image social media has been putting out there for women, young girls grow up thinking they have to be skinny to be pretty. This leads to anxiety, depression and in a few cases suicide. Along with wanting to be slimmer comes bad eating habits and eating disorders. Many who have obesity also suffer with issues related to their mood, self-esteem, and quality of life. The thinking skill for this project was synthesis. I took different ideas from things to create a new and improved product.

Beauty standard fashion board
For History I created a fashion board made of what I created to be humanity's ideal beauty standards. In order to follow the thinking skill of the project, I incorporated different cultures and their most ideal beauty standard. India prized long, black hair as their most beautiful physical trait. For Pakistan ,the idea of having flawless, soft, hairless bodies. For Korea , Youthful ,healthy ,smooth skin and the list goes on. I incorporated all of these ideas which in fact are true for society's beauty standard altogether.
How does obesity affect mental health?
For english I created a visual essay circling the topics of obesity and its affects on mental health. In my video I mention anxiety, eating disorders and depression because of the connection they have to obesity. I also talk about how this leads to suicide in a few cases and how social media play a part in the creation of false body standards. I use pictures in my visual essay video to help enhance and better explain what I am talking about . Things like social media, beauty standards, and body shaming all have a hand in how obesity affects mental health. Obesity in modern day is viewed as unhealthy and “unattractive” because of what society is telling girls what they should look like. Everyone wants to fit in and social media is making it seem as though you have to look a certain way to fit in. The purpose of my project will be to explain how these things and obesity affects mental health and how social media is a huge part of that.
Living behind the mask
For Art I wanted to represent the reality of makeup and appearance in today's society. Makeup is a way to cover up what women in society view as "ugly". Today society is based around perfect flawless appearances. When in reality this way of thinking isn't okay. It is toxic, fake, and unrealistic. Girls are put in the position to think that not looking like the girl on the front of a magazine makes them ugly. That model has been but in layers of makeup, filters, and many different facial changes to look the way she does. That is just the reality of it.
